Custom Media without Antibiotics are specialized mammalian cell culture media formulated without routine antibiotics. They are designed to support selected primary human, bovine, and porcine cell types, including endothelial cells, mammary epithelial cells, bronchial and tracheal epithelial cells, dermal fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, mesenchymal stem cells, synoviocytes, and porcine endothelial cells. Each custom media formulation has been customized according to the source, phenotype, and intended application of the cells.
Primary cells often require cell-type-specific combinations of nutrients, serum or human serum, extracellular-matrix components, and growth factor cytokines to maintain viability, attachment, proliferation, morphology, and differentiated functions in vitro. Custom cell culture media formulations without antibiotics allow researchers to omit routine antimicrobial agents when their experimental design requires a defined culture environment or when antibiotic exposure could influence the biological endpoints being measured.
Antibacterial antibiotics can reduce the growth of susceptible bacteria, while antimycotics or antifungal agents can reduce the growth of susceptible fungi and yeast. Removing antibiotics may also be useful when studying cellular responses to inflammatory stimuli, infection-related pathways, plasmid transfection, gene expression, or the production of cell-derived proteins in which antimicrobial agents could affect the experimental system or readout.
Antibiotic-free custom cell culture media should always be used with rigorous aseptic technique and appropriate contamination monitoring. The absence of antibiotics does not protect cultures from bacteria, fungi, yeast, mycoplasma, or viruses, and antibiotics themselves should not be used as a substitute for routine contamination testing. Antibiotic-free cultures can be especially valuable for identifying contamination early and for avoiding the possibility that antimicrobial agents will suppress or mask a contaminating organism.
