Description
Human Astrocyte Media is a specialized growth medium optimized for the requirements of primary human astrocytes, a key glial cell type in the central nervous system. Astrocytes are distributed throughout the brain, where they regulate the extracellular environment, support neuronal survival and metabolic function, modulate synaptic signaling, and contribute to neurovascular unit function. In BBB and neurovascular biology studies, astrocytes support endothelial properties primarily when integrated into BBB/neurovascular unit systems (for example, via astrocyte–endothelial co-culture or conditioned-media approaches), since BBB barrier formation is driven by brain microvascular endothelial tight junctions. Consequently, astrocyte cultures are widely used to study normal human glial biology as well as pathological processes including neurodegenerative disease, brain injury, neuroinflammation, and central nervous system oncology.
In cell culture, Human Astrocyte Media supports primary astrocyte culture and astrocyte-based cell models, helping maintain characteristic morphology, cell viability, and astrocyte phenotype stability across passages. It is commonly used in research settings where standardized cell culture media conditions are required for reliable cellular phenotypes — such as models used for glioblastoma studies, neuron–glial co-cultures, and disease modeling that examines astrocyte activation states, reactive gliosis, and altered gene expression. The medium can also be used in 3D cell culture formats designed to better represent aspects of brain tissue organization and signaling.
Researchers also utilize Human Astrocyte Media in stem cell workflows, including differentiation protocols in which neural progenitor cell (NPC) populations or pluripotent stem cell-derived lineages are guided toward mature glial fates. In these contexts, astrocyte medium may be used to support maturation and functional outputs relevant to neurobiology and regenerative medicine as part of a broader differentiation pipeline. Using a defined, human-optimized medium is particularly valuable when establishing reproducible human primary cell benchmarks for comparison against rodent models or cell line-based glioblastoma platforms, including cancer cell lines used in glioblastoma and CNS disease modeling.
Human Astrocyte Media provides a complete medium approach for primary human astrocytes — supporting reproducible culture performance and enabling downstream investigations into neuronal support, neurovascular biology, and astrocyte involvement in neuroinflammation and CNS disease.
Medium carefully optimized for the characteristics and requirements unique to Human Astrocytes. Attention to detail ensures ideal cell health, viability, performance, physiology, morphology, consistency and data.
