In July 2025, at a collaborative FDA & NIH Workshop on Reducing Animal Testing, the NIH announced:

“All new NIH Funding Opportunities moving forward should incorporate language on consideration of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).

NIH will no longer seek proposals exclusively for animal models.”

Starting in 2026, grants that were authored and submitted after the NIH announcement will be funded and many will need primary cells for “organ-on-a-chip” devices and organoids.
