Description
Rat Osteoblasts (ROb) are primary, lineage-specific bone cells from rats. Functioning as the primary bone forming cells of the skeletal system, these highly specialized mesenchymal cells are dedicated to synthesizing the organic extracellular matrix and orchestrating structural calcification.
In the living organism, these cells are located within rat bone, specifically lining the surface layers of primary bone tissue such as the periosteum and endosteum. They reside precisely at sites of active skeletal modeling, remodeling, and structural repair.
The fundamental biological role of these cells is driving bone formation and bone mineralization to preserve structural integrity. During this process, they exhibit high alkaline phosphatase activity and initiate the gene expression of critical bone matrix proteins, notably osteocalcin. To maintain overall bone health, they also secrete coupling factors that modulate the counter-balancing activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption, ensuring skeletal mass remains stable.
