Rat Smooth Muscle Cell Induction Medium is a culture formulation designed to support the contractile phenotype of primary rat vascular smooth muscle cells. In standard expansion culture, vascular smooth muscle cells may shift from a quiescent, contractile state to a more synthetic, proliferative state. By providing induction-supporting components and defined nutrients, this medium helps promote cellular elongation and the expression of smooth muscle contractile markers in primary rat vascular smooth muscle cells.
Vascular smooth muscle cells are major cellular components of the tunica media within the arterial wall, including the aorta, major systemic arteries, and pulmonary arteries.
Within the blood vessel wall, these cells contribute to vascular tone, contractility, and structural support. They contract and relax in response to mechanical stretch, neural inputs, and vasoactive factors from adjacent endothelial cells.
