By encapsulating cells in alginate, the kit creates a supportive 3D three-dimensional microenvironment that promotes spherical morphology, helps maintain chondrogenic activity, and supports robust cartilage matrix production.
Chondrocytes expanded in monolayer 2D two-dimensional culture often become dedifferentiated and lose key features of mature cartilage cells. In contrast, alginate encapsulation helps cells regain a more chondrogenic state, including expression of cartilage-associated matrix components such as collagen and aggrecan. This makes the kit an excellent tool for studies focused on phenotype recovery, matrix synthesis, and cartilage biology.
