Human Dendritic Cells from Peripheral Blood (HDC-PB) are specialized antigen-presenting cell populations that arise from hematopoietic progenitors in the bone marrow. As a critical dendritic cell type, these cells function as the primary sentinels of the immune response, bridging innate and adaptive immunity by capturing and processing antigen material for presentation to T cell subsets. Within the blood, HDC-PB populations are distinct from other mononuclear cells such as B cell and NK cell lineages, as well as the diverse white blood cell components including monocyte and platelets populations. While human DC populations are functionally diverse, myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) are often characterized by constitutive CD11c expression. Dendritic cells are highly heterogeneous, with each DC subset specialized to perform distinct immunological functions.

  • Myeloid and Plasmacytoid Lineages: In addition to myeloid DC populations, the plasmacytoid dendritic cell (or plasmacytoid DC) is a critical subset known for producing large quantities of type I interferons in response to viral pathogens. While traditional clinical procedures like blood transfusion primarily address blood disorders or acute deficits in hemoglobin, understanding the baseline immune cell landscape is vital for assessing how these treatments might affect immune-mediated disease progression.
