Description

Rabbit Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (RbAOSMC) are primary smooth muscle cells isolated from rabbit aortic tissue, serving as a well-established experimental model for investigating vascular biology, smooth muscle cell proliferation, and cardiovascular pharmacology.

In vivo, vascular smooth muscle cells populate the arterial wall, where they regulate vascular tone and structural remodeling. In experimental research, RbAOSMC — alongside comparative models utilizing animal cells, mouse systems, and related mesenchymal stem cell or immortalized cell lines — have been used in diverse functional studies. For instance, researchers have utilized RbAOSMC to demonstrate that the anti-restenosis drug probucol inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation by enhancing apoptosis and inducing heme oxygenase-1 expression. Furthermore, these cells have been applied to evaluate the performance of novel pH and carbon dioxide sensor systems designed for measuring real-time metabolic activity in cultured cells, as well as to characterize the receptor pharmacology, antiplatelet actions, and vascular pharmacology of novel receptor antagonists. Standard characterization confirms that RbAOSMC are positive for alpha smooth muscle actin expression using specific antibodies, verifying their smooth muscle phenotype.

Maintaining experimental integrity requires rigorous quality control and careful handling of the biological product. Vials are typically shipped on dry ice and stored in liquid nitrogen; researchers should follow the provided thawing and culture protocol, maintain strict sterile technique, and perform routine contamination testing (e.g., screened for mycoplasma, bacteria, yeast, and fungi) to ensure reliable downstream cellular analysis.

Rabbit Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (RbAOSMC) from Cell Applications, Inc. were used to:

  • Demonstrate that anti-restenosis drug probucol inhibits vascular smooth cell proliferation by enhancing apoptosis and inducing heme oxygenase-1
  • Evaluate performance of a novel pH/CO2 sensor system for measuring metabolic activity of cultured cells
  • Characterize the receptor pharmacology, antiplatelet activity, and vascular pharmacology of a novel receptor antagonist

Characterization: positive for smooth muscle cell specific alpha-actin expression
