Description

Rat Neuron Media are specialized neuronal medium formulations designed to support the attachment, survival, and long-term maintenance of primary rat neurons in vitro, helping preserve neuronal morphology, polarity, and functional performance. Neurons are highly complex, dynamically polarized, electrically excitable cells that communicate through synapses and contribute to information processing throughout the nervous system, including both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). In Rat Neuron Media, primary rat neuronal cultures serve as foundational models for studying neuronal electrophysiology and neuronal activity, synaptic plasticity, neurite outgrowth, neuroinflammation, and mechanisms underlying disease, including neurodegenerative processes and traumatic injury.
Formulated to meet the metabolic and signaling needs of primary neurons, Rat Neuron Media support a range of CNS and PNS neuronal cell types isolated from defined rat brain and spinal tissue regions. Commonly used primary cell types include hippocampal, cortical, striatal, midbrain, cerebellar, and spinal cord neurons (CNS), as well as dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons (PNS). For neuronal tissue-derived cell types, the medium is typically used with appropriately coated culture vessels — such as poly-L-lysine or laminin-coated surfaces — so that cells can attach, extend neurites, and establish axon–dendrite organization and synaptic connectivity with common morphological features associated with healthy neuronal network organization.
In many experiments, these neuronal medium formulations are used to maintain serum-reduced or serum-free neuronal cultures supplemented with defined additives (for example, B-27/NS21-type components), which helps limit non-neuronal overgrowth and supports reproducible neuronal differentiation and maintenance. They are also commonly applied in neuron–astrocyte co-culture formats, where astrocyte-mediated metabolic and signaling interactions can better model highly complex communication network dynamics of the nervous system and improve physiological relevance.
Rat Neuron Media provide a defined culture foundation for primary rat neurons, supporting robust cell growth, synaptic connectivity, and physiological responsiveness. By helping researchers generate consistent neuronal networks for analysis, these neuronal medium systems are used across neurobiology research and translational studies, including electrophysiology and imaging-based experiments, gene expression and pathology-associated phenotyping, and neurotoxicity testing of candidate compounds and reagents in models that aim to reflect central nervous system and peripheral nervous system biology in animals and relevance to humans.
CAI offers media specialized for Rat Neurons, providing optimal culture conditions, cell health, data integrity and reproducibility. When cultured under the recommended conditions with specialty culture medium, neurons arborize and form complex neurite network in one week, and stain positive for β III-Tubulin.
